It is very important that the next elected Town Council in Tórshavn has a lot more focus on integration than we have today. Integration must be on our political agenda. As Tórshavn is the capital, it would be appropriate that we serve as a model for the rest of the country, when it comes to how we help newcomers to be integrated in a good way in our country. Of course it is a matter for the Council to give newcomers the best service. We must have employees and an office for the matter, so newcomers know where to contact professionals when they need any kind of help or advice.
Arriving at a foreign country as a newcomer and trying to integrate is not always easy. Everything is different and on top of that, the language and the culture is different. We know from other countries that newcomers often have a difficult start. Eventhough many things are different, we must in good relations find a gentle way of a good integration. And I think, that the Town Council must give this service. An office that can advice and guide new citizens to be easily integrated into our society. The advice should be easily accesible and help with for example practical tasks such as how to get in touch with the Health System, School System, Social System or the Labour Market.
When I am adressing you newcomers in Tórshavn it is because I want to improve your chances for a smooth and easy integration. I want to prioritize integration on my political agenda. My name is Birita and I am a candidate for the Socialdemocratic Party for the next election on November 10th. I am 36 years old, married to Jóannes and we have five children. I am a nurse and I work in an elderly home here in the capital.
I want to be your voice in the Town Council.
Birita Baldvinsdóttir Iversen,
Candidate on List C
